Cost of a vacancy

A framework for estimating what an empty seat costs an employer — lost output, overtime cover, hiring cost and time to full productivity.

What the tool computes

It assembles an estimate from inputs the employer supplies: the value of output per seat, the cost of covering it with overtime or agency staff, direct hiring cost, and the ramp-up period before a new hire is fully productive. It is not a statutory calculation — the inputs come from the firm's own operation.

What the tool does not compute

  • The interactive tool is published on the Czech page only. The English and German pages set out the same method but carry no calculator.
  • The result is only as good as the inputs: value of output per seat is the employer's estimate, not a statistic.
  • It applies no statutory rates and does not replace an employer-cost calculation — the employer cost calculators do that.
  • It does not model second-order effects such as further departures from an overloaded team, or an order lost.
